Chora

The capital of the island is particularly beautiful and picturesque. It was built high, ten kilometres from Katapola, in order to protect the inhabitants of the island from the pirates. The castle is built on an imposing rock, in the centre of the town, and its gate is in the chapel of Aghios Georgios (St. George).

Chora enchants visitors with its many churches, cobbled streets, and its ‘emprostiades’, that is, stone arches that turn parts of the narrow streets into sheds. A walk in Chora includes stopping at major attractions, such as the Tower of Gavras, Kato Lakkos (the Lower Pit), the recently opened Church Museum and the wonderful Loza, the central square.
